Back in the 80’s I remember my Dad saying to me ‘go into banking’, it’s a job for life. Oh the irony of that in more recent times! I valued my Dad’s advice and so into banking I went, Nat West to be precise. It wasn’t long before I realised people mattered to me more than numbers. I moved to Thomas Cook in 1987 and enjoyed a varied career with a Company I loved. I enjoyed retail, managed a large profitable store and worked with some amazing teams. I also found my true vocation, working to support and develop people to maximise their potential and enhance organisational performance. This is where I kick started my HR career. I studied and attained my CIPD qualification and gained invaluable experience across a number of roles, culminating in a senior HR position in the late 90’s.
Whilst I reluctantly left Thomas Cook in the early 2000’s, it was to start a new adventure. My husband and I moved to Jersey in the Channel Islands and had seven wonderful years working offshore and immersing ourselves in the islands culture and way of life. I worked in finance once again, this time as a senior HR Business Partner. I am a very driven person and like to challenge and stretch myself. I made the decision to step off the corporate ladder for a while during our stay and opened my own gift and interior design business. I learnt so much about running a business and it also gave me the chance to spread my creative wings at the same time.
As our time came to a close in Jersey, I sold the business and started to focus on the next stage of my career. I returned to the UK and a new job. Back to my roots in HR, working for Warburtons. Initially in the South, but the majority of my 12 years with this wonderful family business was spent commuting weekly to the North West. I headed up the HR team at Warburtons Head Office in Bolton supporting circa 350 employees within the second biggest grocery brand in the UK. Working in a FMCG business brought new and exciting challenges and allowed me to further explore my skills as a HR professional. I partnered closely with the Board and senior leaders within the organisation, building a robust talent pipeline and creating an engaging environment where everyone was able to bring their best to work. I specialised in developing high potential individuals at middle manager level, coaching many to take on more senior roles and I still support this programme today. I was very much involved in driving a coaching culture in Warburtons. Working as a career & development coach with employees at all levels and training leaders to coach and empower their teams to deliver results, improve performance and make the most of people’s potential.
Now the next chapter of my career has begun. Taking all the experience I have gained over the last 25 plus years and channelling it into setting up my own business, One Little Bean Coaching.
